LEONARDO DICAPRIO: FINALLY!

Leonardo DiCaprio interview ShowBiz TV

‘It does feel like Leo’s night!’ cackled Kate Winslet on the red carpet outside London’s Royal Opera House last night, ahead of the BAFTA awards ceremony that looked at last as though it might be about to honour the blushing male bridesmaid of film. With apologies to DiCaprio’s fellow nominee in the Best Actor category, Michael Fassbender, who was posed nonchalantly beside her, Kate overcame the potential embarrassment of prominent goose bumps to affect a comic victory stance as she cried, ‘We’re in it to win it, baby!’

And so she was: making off with the shiny mask-on-a-stick for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Steve Jobs’, while her so-what competitors could only shiver and stare.

‘Leo’s night’ it surely was. I’m not wild about ‘The Revenant’, to be honest, which also took Best Film, but which for me fails to live up to the tidal-wave of hype. I found it a bit of a yawnfest: there’s only so much grim and life-threatening stuff I can stomach in one hit. I think I had my eyes closed at the gory bits for about half of the entire movie. Not my thang, baby. Don’t it always seem to go.

But hey, Leo bagged it, blowing his primary competitors Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and Fassbender (Steve Jobs) out of the pool, paying tribute to his mother for driving him three hours a day out of their downbeat Los Angeles neighbourhood to allow him to attend a school that would give him a better chance – and whose seventieth birthday it was, on BAFTA day. Nice. He owes it all, he couldn’t wait to tell us, to her. Seems like a nice boy. And it bodes awfully well for the Oscars, which nobody can deny… coming soon.
